Greed
Jody, age 9
Greed is the result of a case of the I wants – I want more, I want bigger, I want faster, I want better – no matter if it hurts the planet or not. A boy helps a greed-obsessed adult understand that he doesn’t have to change everything to turn greed into being green.

RING LEADER:
Ladies and Gentleman
Boys and Girls
You are about to witness the biggest, the grandest,
the most versatile letters in the world

Watch out folks…it’s a doozie.

There is a G and an R and an E, E and D.
These letters can be many things,
any things you want them to be.

A house, a boat, a bowl of ice cream
They’ll do whatever you want
Fullfill any dream

So step right up! For a quarter you can touch ‘em.
For a dollar you can sit in ‘em.
For two you can stand, don’t worry you won’t fall.
But if you want more you’ll have to give it all

LITTLE BOY:
Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me sir
I…really don’t mean to cause a big stir

But I was just wondering about your big word
Does it need to be so large? It seems kind of absurd
It is just one word and though very tall
Is it really necessary that it take it all?

RING LEADER:
Ha ha ha.
For one so small you are quite loquacious
This word…it is ravenous… its appetite is voracious.
It must have it all, have it all don’t you see
And then, only then, will it stop charging a fee

Besides, It can even be a car!
Drive it anywhere – near or far!
Step up, step up young man
The first ride is free, just give me your hand

LITTLE BOY:
No. That’s okay. Thank you, anyway.
I would really rather take the bus
I mean, isn’t that better for all of us?

I was just wondering, maybe you could
Make the word smaller, recycle the wood

RING LEADER:
Do you know how much this cost me?
The G, the R, the E, E and D
Each one of those letters was built by me!
The hours of work, the time I put in
If I tear it down now then what a mess I’ll be in

LITTLE KID:
Well, what if you replaced the D with an N?
There wouldn’t be anything holding you back then

RING LEADER:
So, I don’t need to change everything I’ve done up until now?

LITTLE KID:
No, just make few changes, a few rearranges.
And I think you’ll be surprised to see,
You might save the planet for you and for me.

RING LEADER:
Ladies and Gentleman
There is a G and an R and an E, E and N!
These letters can be many things,
any things you want them to be.
